Highlights of Guatemala


(12 DAYS / 11 NIGHTS)
Departs Guatemala:  Monday or Thursday

DAY 1 – GUATEMALA CITY
Arrival in Guatemala City.  Pickup at airport and transfer to hotel.  Overnight accommodations at selected hotel.

DAY 2 – GUATEMALA CITY/ANTIGUA/PANAJACHEL
Breakfast.  Transfer to the colonial city of Antigua.  Half day city tour of Antigua, first capital of Guatemala, from 1543 to 1773.  Visit the Palace of the Captains General Building, the Main Square, museums and the Cathedral of San José.    Transfer to Panajachel where the final battle took place between the spanish conquistadors and their allies the Cakchiqueles against the people of Tzujiles.  Overnight accommodations at selected hotel.  B

DAY 3 – PANAJACHEL/SANTIAGO ATITLAN/PANAJACHEL
Breakfast.  Lake Atitlan tour.  By boat cross the lake to visit San Antonio Palopo, San Pedro La Laguna and Santiago Atitlan, the largest and most traditional modern day Maya village.  Overnight accommodations at selected hotel.  B

DAY 4- PANAJACHEL/CHICHICASTENANGO/GUATEMALA CITY
Breakfast.  Transfer to Chichicastenango.  Tour the colorful open-air market and the church of Santo Tomas, built in 1540.  Transfer to Guatemala City.  Overnight accommodations at selected hotel.  B

DAY 5 – GUATEMALA CITY/BIOTOPO DEL QUETZAL/CANDELARIA CAVES
Breakfast(box)  6:00 a.m. transfer to Alta Verapaz.  On the way visit the natural reserve of the Biotopo del Quetzal in the cloud forest of Las Verapaces.  Continue on to the Caves of Candelaria, among the most stunning natural features in the Maya world.  These immense, awe-inspiring underground chambers have been a major pilgrimage center for the Maya for thousands of years.  Lunch.  Visit the site.  Dinner.  Overnight accommodations at Candelaria Caves eco-lodge.  B, L, D

DAY 6 –  CANDELARIA CAVES/CEIBAL/SANTA ELENA, PETÉN
Breakfast.  Transfer overland to the archaeological site of Ceibal, situated on the shores of the Pasión river.  Here we will clamber up the rocky river bluffs to visit the largest ancient Maya center in the Pasión.  Visit the site.  Transfer to the frontier town of Sayaxché continuing on to Santa Elena, Petén.  Overnight accommodations at selected hotel.  B, Box Lunch

DAY 7 – SANTA ELENA, PETÉN/TIKAL/EL REMATE
Breakfast.  Transfer to the archaeological site of Tikal. Visit the Complex Q, Maya arch, temples I, II, and IV, the central Plaza, Lost World, and the acropolis North.  Lunch within the park.  Transfer to El Remate. Overnight accommodations at selected hotel.  B, L

DAY 8 – EL REMATE/YAXHÁ/RÍO DULCE
Breakfast.  Transfer to the archaeological sites of Yaxhá.  This city is located approximately 50 miles from the island city of Flores.  Yaxhá means “green water” in the Maya language and is located on the shores of Laguna Yaxhá.  This city reached its splendor when the other maya cities were in irreversible downfall.  Transfer to Río Dulce.  Overnight accommodations at Hacienda Tijax eco-lodge or similar.  B

DAY 9 – RÍO DULCE/LIVINGSTON/RIÓ DULCE
Breakfast.  Visit by boat the Río Dulce, where beautiful canyons and tropical animals are part of this scenic view.  Visit the Garifuna town of Livingston and the Castle of San Felipe where legend narrates that it was constructed on bottles of rum left by the pirates of the 1700´s.  Transfer to Río Dulce.  Overnight accommodations at Hacienda Tijax eco-lodge or similar.  B
DAY 10 – RÍO DULCE/QUIRIGUÁ/COPÁN
Breakfast.  7:00 a.m. transfer to the archaeological site of Quiriguá, where the largest stalae of the Maya World can be found.  Visit the Acrópolis, the Central Plaza and the Juego de Pelota.  Transfer to the archaeological site of Copán.  Visit the park and the museum.  Copán is described as the most artistic Mayan city of the Maya World.  Overnight accommodations at Hotel Marina Copán*** or similar.  B

DAY 11 – COPÁN/GUATEMALA CITY
Breakfast.  Transfer to Guatemala City.  Visit the museum of Anthropology.  Overnight accommodations at selected hotel.  B

DAY 12 – GUATEMALA CITY/LA AURORA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Breakfast.  Transfer to La Aurora International airport for flight departure.  B

Breakfast.  Early morning transfer to Alta Verapaz and on the way visit the Biotopo del Quetzal, the  natural reserve located in the cloud forest of Las Verapaces.  Transfer to the imperial city of Cobán where you will visit the Cathedral, the Calvario and the Principal Maya museum.  Transfer to Santa Cruz Verapaz.  Overnight accommodations at Park Hotel*** o similar.  B

DAY 6 – SANTA CRUZ VER./CANDELARIA CAVES/CEIBAL/SAYAXCHÉ/PUNTA DE CHIMINO
Breakfast.  Transfer to Candelaria Caves among the most stunning natural features in the Maya world.  These immense, awe-inspiring underground chambers have been a major pilgrimage center for the Maya for thousands of years.  Visit the caves.  Transfer to the archaeological site of Ceibal.  Visit the site.  Transfer to the frontier town of Sayaxché.  Transfer by boat to the archaeological site of Punta de Chimino.  Overnight accommodations at Chimino´s Island eco-lodge.  B, L, D

DAY 7 – PUNTA DE CHIMINO/AGUATECA/SAYAXCHÉ/SANTA ELENA, PETÉN
Breakfast.  Transfer by boat to the archeological site of Aguateca.  Visit this site not like common tourists but like explorers, where we will visit the canyon that divides the center of the city from the outskirts.  Lunch at Punto de Chimino.  Transfer by boat to the frontier town of Sayaxché and continue on overland to Santa Elena, Petén.  Overnight accommodations at selected hotel.  B, L

DAY 8 – SANTA ELENA, PETÉN/TIKAL/EL REMATE
Breakfast.  Transfer to the archaeological site of Tikal. Visit the Complex Q, Maya arch, temples I, II, and IV, the central Plaza, Lost World, and the acropolis North.  Lunch within the park.  Transfer to El Remate. Overnight accommodations at selected hotel.  B, L

DAY 9 – EL REMATE/YAXHÁ/SANTA ELENA, PETÉN/GUATEMALA CITY
Breakfast.  Transfer to the archaeological sites of Yaxhá. This  city is located approximately 50 miles from the island city of Flores.  Transfer to Mundo Maya airport in Santa Elena, Petén for the return flight to Guatemala City.  Pick up at Aurora International airport and transfer to hotel.    Overnight accommodations at selected hotel.  B
DAY 10 – GUATEMALA CITY/LA AURORA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Breakfast.  Transfer to La Aurora International airport for flight departure.  B
