Brazilian Cultural Roots

It is a common agreement that one of the main reasons why the Brazilian culture is so appreciated worldwide is because of its miscegenation. Descendants from Native Indians, Europeans, Africans and Asians have gathered in this country and blended races for centuries, creating some of the world’s richest cultural heritages.

The states of Rio de Janeiro and Bahia are live manifestations of this culture. The strong African influence allowed the development of Samba and many other authentic rhythms, as well as Capoeira, the Candomblé religion, dozens of typical dishes, not to mention the unique warm and friendly personality of the Brazilian people.

We’ll start our trip in Rio visiting the “must see” attractions, such as the Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Statue of Christ, but we’ll also take you to the city’s “backstage”, inside a favela (slums). There you’ll be able to understand the rough reality of Brazil’s lower social classes and have the opportunity to make a difference, helping the local inhabitants to paint their own houses.

From there we travel to Salvador, where we’ll visit the historic district of Pelourinho learning about the history of Bahia, and take a day-tour to the hippie-village of Praia do Forte, a paradise beach where we’ll visit an environmental project that protects Brazil’s Marine Turtles. Behind the scenes, we’ll also visit a social project that develops a strong sense of community, improving the life-quality inside a favela, teaching music and other forms or art to the local children and also helping their parents to get a better education.

Our last week we’ll be spent in the Chapada Diamantina, a wonderful region surrounded by canyons, waterfalls, caves and crystal clear rivers amidst the Caatinga ecysystem, in the countryside of Bahia. There we’ll visit some of the most beautiful Brazilian natural attractions while interacting with the local community. A partnership with two local NGO’s makes it possible to travelers to have a close relationship with the community, on a gainful process of cultural exchange.
